A little blog tweaking

There was always a danger of this happening. If the facility for a little bit of customisation is there, then my brain - ever on the hunt for distraction and novelty - is going to want to do some tweaking.

This was the main reason to come over to Bear blog from another platform - I didn't need to be able to change much, but I did want to just change at least some very basic things to make my blog feel more like my blog.

If there are a few simple themes, of course I'll try them out. Even if there are lines of CSS code (which I don't really understand), I'm going to try changing some of the numbers to see what happens. (This is just a quick and immediately satisfying replacement for learning it properly.)

I had a play with a lot of things, but all I've changed appearance-wise for now is the font my blog uses back to a standard sans-serif, instead of the serif font I'd been using before. Otherwise I'm pretty satisfied that the background page and links colours I customised are fine for now and it all looks OK.

A little bigger blog tweaking than that

The bigger change is to the blog's name, from 'o4fs.world' to now simply 'brumph'.

Why? Well, I already use brumph as my name on Mastodon, and I think it's a more direct, less dissonant mental link if, when I post blog links, the name is somewhere in the same ball-park. o4fs.world would possibly have grown on me and felt natural in the end, but something about it - in my brain at least - was jarring. Now with it being exactly the same, it sits more comfortably among my neurons.

When I checked and found brumph.com was available, that made up my mind to change it, and I needed to do it before the blog got too big and complicated to correct all the o4fs.world post graphics I'd already used.

The URL here on Bear has been changed, and a re-direct applied to the former o4fs.world domain, so old link posts will still work but bring you here. (UPDATE 9-10-24: Apparently it may not be working... eff knows what else I can do to correct that, but I'll have a go, apologies)

I also have to update the graphics I used, which has given me pause to think at the moment. I like the approach of having the link appear with a picture other than the standard Bear logo when it's used, on Mastodon for example, so for the moment I've just used my 'man waiting with dog outside a Brocante shop' image as the meta-data that appears as a preview, because I use the same image as my avatar elsewhere. Also, I know for certain there will never be any copyright issues with it because I took it!

I may leave that as it is, or I might look into using a custom one, even on a per post basis.

Anyway, none of this is of any great interest to very many people as it stands (judging by the visitor analytics, not much of my blog is), but it does pass some time for me to write it all up, as well as all the time I've taken with the tweaking to get to here.

And of course, there is still the possibility of more tweaking yet. This is me - abruptly and completely changing my mind about things overnight is pretty standard behaviour.

Note: If you have normally arrived here from direct links and haven't seen the main home page before, there is now a great explanation of where 'brumph' came from on there. Take a look from here if you like.
